Kathak is one of India's eight major classical dance forms, with a history stretching back to ancient temple dance traditions. The word derives from 'Katha' — meaning story — for the Kathak dancer is fundamentally a storyteller who narrates tales from Hindu mythology through the perfect unity of footwork (Tatkar), spinning (Chakkar), expressive gestures (Mudras) and facial expression (Abhinaya).
Uniquely among classical Indian dance forms, Kathak evolved through two distinct cultural streams. The Lucknow Gharana flourished in the Nawabi courts of Awadh under Nawab Wajid Ali Shah, developing extraordinary grace, lyrical elegance and Thumri-based Abhinaya. The Jaipur Gharana was shaped by Rajputana's martial culture — vigorous, powerful Tatkar, complex Tihais and rapid Chakkar define its character.

The art of narrating stories through facial expressions, hand gestures (Mudras) and body language. Abhinaya enacts tales from the Ramayana, Mahabharata and the Radha-Krishna narrative — the soulful, poetic heart of Kathak.
ठुमरी · Thumri
Devotional Expression
A semi-classical vocal form interpreted through dance. Thumri in Kathak — especially in the Lucknow tradition — is pure Abhinaya: the dancer embodies the devotion and longing of Radha for Krishna through nuanced expression.
